[serialposts]I am a fatherless child. Perhaps more figuratively than literally, but fatherless all the same. It made all the big things in life harder than they should’ve been. And yet it wasn’t until recently that I began to really understand the effect that it has had on me. Being fatherless has defined who I am and how I live my life.
But this project isn’t about me.
It’s about the millions of other children who are fatherless.
It seems like every week I come into contact with someone else who is fatherless. Many times they are adults who are realizing they have a story to share. But often they are teens. Or children.
No matter how old they are, they share the same struggles. The struggle to feel worthy of love. The struggle to find mentors who can be a positive male role model in their lives. The struggle to own their story. And to tell it.
It’s not about individuals. It’s about our communities. Entire generations are affected by fatherlessness. Whether or not we consider ourselves fatherless, I believe God is calling us all to act on behalf of those who are fatherless.
That’s why I’m so excited about this group blogging project. It’s about helping fatherless children find their voice. It’s about acting on our faith and advocating for the ones who can’t advocate for themselves. It’s about helping all people claim their identity as a beloved child of God.
The author says it best in his note to the book:
Maybe this book will be a voice for you, helping you articulate your own story. Maybe it will make you more aware of those around you – a generation of fatherless people who are crying out for help. I hope it will stir you and move you to action.
My prayer for this project is this:
May it stir each one of us and move us to action. Amen.
