about the book
Every kid wonders if they matter. This curriculum answers that question through story.
Children today face constant pressure to perform, measure up, and prove their worth. God’s Kind of People: Seen by God pushes back on all of that — gently, truthfully, and through the most powerful teaching tool we have: story.
Across thirteen sessions, kids journey through Scripture and church history, meeting people God chose and used in surprising ways. These aren’t polished heroes who had it all together. They’re the overlooked, the unlikely, the ones who failed and doubted and started over. David left in the fields while his brothers stood before Samuel. The Samaritan woman alone at the well. Peter, who denied Jesus three times. Harriet Tubman, who heard God’s voice in the dark and led hundreds to freedom. Each one was seen by God first — and formed by God over time.
What’s included in each session:
- A narrative story read-aloud written for each character
- Opening icebreaker and group game
- Creative response activity
- Faith Talk discussion questions for grades K-8
- Scripture memory verse
- Closing prayer guide
- Family Connection take-home handout
Designed for volunteer leaders. Every session is fully written and ready to lead. No extensive prep required. Whether you’re a seasoned children’s ministry director or a first-time volunteer, everything you need is right here.
Works for midweek programs, Sunday formation classes, and small group ministry serving kindergarten through eighth grade in a single-room setting.
Seen by God is Volume 1 in the God’s Kind of People series — a four-volume children’s curriculum exploring identity, mission, character, and perseverance through the stories of people who walked with God.

what you’ll explore over 13+ weeks
Each week pairs a vivid narrative story with hands-on creative responses, guided discussion, and closing prayer, giving kids a full-bodied experience of faith through characters from David to Harriet Tubman (and more).
Week 1: David
He was the youngest son, left in the field while his brothers lined up to be chosen. This week’s story is about what God sees when the world isn’t looking.
Week 2: Gideon
He was hiding when God called him mighty warrior. This week explores what it means to be called before you feel ready.
Week 3: Ruth
She left everything she knew to follow someone else’s God into a foreign land. This week’s story is about faithful love and what it means to belong.
Week 4: Zacchaeus
Everyone in Jericho had already written him off. This week is about what happens when Jesus stops, looks up, and calls you by name.
Week 5: The Samaritan Woman
She came to the well alone, in the middle of the day, when no one else would be there. This week’s story is about being fully known and still fully welcomed.
Week 6: Peter
He denied Jesus three times and spent three days believing that was the end of his story. This week is about what restoration actually looks like.
Week 7: Lydia
She was already praying by the river when Paul arrived. This week’s story is about the ones God finds who were already looking for him.
Week 8: Barnabas
He was never the main character, and that was never the point. This week is about what it means to see potential in someone nobody else believes in yet.
Week 9: St. Francis of Assisi
Everyone in Assisi knew him as the prince of the city, the merchant’s charming son. This week’s story is about what happens when God strips away every label that doesn’t fit.
Week 10: Julian of Norwich
She grew up during the Black Death asking one question: if God is love, why does it hurt so much? This week’s story is about holding the hard questions without letting go of God.
Week 11: Corrie ten Boom
She and her sister were sent to a Nazi concentration camp for hiding Jewish families. This week is about what cannot be taken from you, no matter what.
Week 12: St. Patrick
He was kidnapped into slavery at sixteen and spent six years alone on a foreign hillside. This week’s story is about being formed in a place you never would have chosen.
Week 13: Harriet Tubman
She was born into a world that had decided everything about her before she arrived. This week is about the voice that knew her real name when the world called her something lesser.
Week 14+: Build Your Own Stories
Every church has people whose lives show what it looks like to be seen, called, and shaped by God. This week invites someone from your own community to walk in and tell that story to your kids.

frequently asked questions
What age range is this curriculum designed for?
God’s Kind of People: Seen by God is written for kids in grades K–8. The stories work for all ages in a mixed-age setting, and the discussion questions are differentiated for elementary (K–4) and middle school (5–8) so every kid has an entry point.
How long is each session?
Each session is designed for a 90-minute evening program, but it’s built to flex. If you have less time, the story and Faith Talk carry the core content on their own. If you have more, the creative responses and icebreakers give you room to breathe.
Do I need to be an experienced teacher to lead this?
Not at all. Every session includes step-by-step leader instructions, discussion prompts, supply lists, and the full story written out for a read-aloud. If you can gather kids and open a book, you can lead this.
What makes the stories different from a typical Bible lesson?
The stories in this series are written in a vivid, narrative style — full scenes, dialogue, and interior life — designed to be heard and remembered the way a good story stays with you. They’re not summaries or lesson outlines. They’re stories you read aloud while kids eat a snack and actually listen.
Does it only cover biblical characters?
No. The series moves from Scripture into church history and includes St. Francis of Assisi, Julian of Norwich, Corrie ten Boom, St. Patrick, and Harriet Tubman alongside the biblical figures. Kids discover that God’s kind of people span all of history and look nothing like the world expects.
What supplies do I need?
Most weeks require basic art supplies — paper, markers, colored pencils — plus a few simple craft materials depending on the activity. A full shopping list is included in the appendix, and the entire season’s supplies for a group of 10–15 kids typically costs well under $100.
Is this tied to a specific denomination?
The curriculum was written in an Episcopal context and includes a Compline-style closing prayer each week, but the content is broadly accessible to any Christian tradition. The theology is solidly orthodox, the stories are universal, and the prayer structure can be adapted easily.
Can I use just one or two weeks as standalone sessions?
Yes. Each week is self-contained with its own story, activity, discussion questions, and prayer. They work as a full series or as individual sessions pulled in wherever they fit.
Is there a digital version available?
Yes. The curriculum is available as a PDF through Gumroad as well as in print through Amazon.
