We went yard sale shopping last weekend. It seemed like there was a different sale on every corner. People selling all sorts of stuff they no longer want or need. Nice things, ratty things, all sorts of things … after all, one person’s junk is another person’s treasure!

I wanted to ask the host of each sale, What do you plan on doing with the money you earn here? But I wasn’t so sure it would be a well-received question. I imagined some of the answers:

It’s none of your business little lady. It’s my money. I’ll do what I want with it!

Pay off my debt. I’ve been going through Dave Ramsey’s book and I’m sacrificing now so I can live later.

Go on vacation. We’re going to travel the world with this money!

Put it in the bank. You never know when a rainy day might hit.

We have yard sales for all kinds of reasons. But have you ever thought that having a yard sale just might change the world?

Through a little project called Garage Sale for Orphans, yard sales are doing just that. Changing the world for orphans all over the world. You just pick a project, gather all your junk, host a yard sale, send the money to Help One Now, and change a life (or maybe even a few).

And if you want to make an even bigger difference, you could gather the whole neighborhood together. I bet everyone has a few pieces of junk they could get rid of. The kids could even set up a lemonade and cookie stand. If people don’t want your junk – maybe they’ll at least want a cookie!

You can check out the active projects and decide which one you’d like to support. And whenever you’re ready to host your yard sale, Help One Now has some great resources for you to use.

My favorite part about this project is that you not only get rid of junk and make money to donate, but you also raise awareness about the extreme poverty that exists all over the world.

And let’s be real … who doesn’t love a garage sale for a cause?

Such a great idea! Our former small group leader was an ace at organizing garage sales to raise money for mission trips or other specific needs. We raised over $700 once, in the rain, right before Christmas. Amazing.

This is a great idea, but bear in mind that we each have our own ’causes’ that we prefer to donate to. I, for one, wish I were rich enough to give to them ALL, but the fact IS, I’m NOT. So, maybe we could host our garage sales for our own causes. The idea is wonderful. And, even IF we happen to need the money for ourselves, we as Christians also know that we will see an increase in what we have if we at LEAST tithe from the proceeds of whatever we do. (I’m here to  assure everyone that this REALLY works. Maybe not each and every time we give, but in the end we WILL be ahead of the game when we do this simple thing.)
