you are a creative

you are a creative

Henri Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage." Courage runs in short supply with me. I am much less brave outwardly, than I am in my own head. But like anything else, creativity can be practiced. It's like a muscle we have that when unused, turns slack. At...

I'm pretty sure that Daysha is a transvestite. Sometimes it's kind of hard to tell. Regardless, she tells her three girlfriends in the room that we are angels, and that they should never turn away angels. Our team was visiting people door-to-door at the Hotel Fairfax...

crowdfunding: what’s it all about?

crowdfunding: what’s it all about?

The word crowdfunding has been popping up all over, but do you know what it means? Crowdfunding describes a way people come together (most of the time online), and pool their money to support a predetermined goal or cause. Money raised from crowdfunding can be...

when jealousy visits

when jealousy visits

Jealousy is one of the occupational hazards of being a writer, and the most degrading. And I, who have been the Leona Helmsley of jealousy, have come to believe that the only things that help ease or transform it are (a) getting older, (b) talking about it until the...

It's a beautiful day to be outside and working in the yard.

Trimmed back some palm trees, resetting the flower beds, and watching the birds nesting.

And some of the bromiliads under one of my oak trees are in full bloom! 😍

It can be exhausting maintaining this yard, but there is so much beauty to behold.

And I can feel the rhythms of God's Creation in this place.

I wish I was a better gardener, and that it had more time (and money) to invest in it. Maybe some day.

Regardless, I'm grateful for what I have. And I'll always appreciate the opportunity to experience God in this sacred place.

"The relationship holds, even when the feeling doesn't. When everything else is stripped away, there's still 'my God.'"

This Good Friday, I had the privilege of reflecting on the fourth word of "The Seven Last Words" of Jesus from the cross — "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" at @stedwardsepiscopal.

If you've ever cried out to a God you couldn't feel, you're in good company. Jesus knows that place. He went there first.

Most churches I talk to assume AI tools are either too expensive or too complicated to be worth the effort.

But here's what I've found: you can get a church running on a genuinely powerful AI stack -- Claude for sermon prep and communication, NotebookLM for repurposing content, OpusClip for turning sermons into social clips, and Canva Pro for graphics -- for about $31/month. And two of those four tools are completely free for nonprofits.

I wrote the book on this (literally -- AI Systems for Churches is on Amazon now), and this post breaks down the exact stack I'd recommend for any church that wants to do more without burning out the people doing it.

You don't need all the answers. You don't need to see the whole road.

You just need enough light for the next step.

That's what grace looks like. And that's what Holy Rhythms for Hurting Hearts is all about -- ancient rhythms that carry you forward, one sacred step at a time.

While at @campwingmann, I had the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist alongside Rev. Garcia Barnswell-Schmidt, one of my absolute favorite people in the @cfdiocese.

We served alongside each other for an incredible youth retreat that I brought my @stedwardsepiscopal youth group too, and it was a great weekend for all.

We talked about Psalm 23 all weekend, and today in my closing sermon, I emphasized to them how it all ends at the Table. Even when we still carry our brokenness, struggles, and junk... He still prepares the Table for us.

And as we prepared the Eucharist, she invited all of the youth there to join us around the Table as she blessed the elements, and we served them right there.

The Lord (YHWH) says, "Come to the Table. I've prepared it just for you."

A Message From Dan

What does it look like to live a Christian life? Like, TRULY live a Christian life? If I’m honest, I’m over the fake front of being a happy, blessed, and perfect person in order to impress others. Truth is, I’m a sinner who’s just trying to figure out how to do this without looking like an absolute fool. I think the Christian life is about admitting our brokenness, while raising our hand to say,”Here I am Lord! What would You have me do?” And that’s what this blog is all about… just a dude trying to do the best I can, and maybe hoping that you’re stumbling through the same journey. Maybe we can walk together.
