astounded and amazed: a sermon on a reading from mark 1
The Reading Mark 1:21-28 Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their...
a prayer for businesses in your community
I was recently asked to pray at the opening of a Board of Directors meeting for my local Chamber of Commerce. It was my first meeting as a board member, which was also the first meeting for the new president for the organization. I was the one asked to pray because...
what makes Christianity different from other world religions?
Don't all religions really just point to the same god? It's easy to see why people would wonder. But they don't point to the same god. In fact, the gods are all quite different, particularly the Christian God. So, what makes Christianity different from other world...

Through it all, we`re not alone. And that fact can carry us through a mountain of pain and worry and stress.
Today in some teaching on the liturgy, one of the things that stood out is how much of it focuses on the "we" and not the "I." And there`s great peace and comfort in the "we."
We not only have God to walk through our trials with us, but we also have each other.

I`ve recently been asked to speak at an event on the topic of my latest book, and it looks like there are more coming!
And it`s wild how many times something comes up in conversation about people and the state of our society right now that triggers in my mind... "I wrote about that in Holy Rhythms."
This feels like one of the most broadly relevant projects that I`ve put together in a while.
It`s a short read, but there`s a lot of good stuff packed in these pages.
If you haven`t read it yet, head over to Amazon and search for it with "holy rhythms for hurting hearts," and get your copy today!

It was awesome to have the opportunity to serve the Holy Eucharist for the New Beginnings youth retreat with Rev @robstrenth at @campwingmann this weekend!
We ministed to 50+ youth from around the @cfdiocese together (with the rest of the amazing team led by Rev @kbbartle), but the conversations we had during our time together will be one of the things I cherish from the weekend.
I`m glad to call him my friend, and I already look forward to the next time we get to minister and celebrate together.

KBC (Kids` Bible Club) at @stedwardsepiscopal on Wednesday night is on a journey through Narnia... starting our read-thru of The Horse and His Boy!
And you can`t go on a journey without your passport...
Kids earn stickers for showing up, bringing a bible, reciting a memory verse, and other activities.
I think my passport pic came out really well, huh?
Great fun for K-8th graders (and some grown-ups too)!

Had a GREAT Bible Study Boot Camp with many of the youth from @stedwardsepiscopal. We spent the day digging into how to study the Scriptures.
We talked about God`s redemption as a central theme, covenants, and how we see God in relentless pursuit of us since the very beginning of Creation all the way through Revelation (and events still to come).
These youth are getting a strong foundation in the Word, and even seeing the role of the Holy Spirit in all of it.
I love teaching this class! It`s fun to work through this material, and to see these young people start to get it.

My 20+ year journey to ordination is becoming a book!
Through all of the ups and downs, and all the times I almost walked away completely from the Call, there`s stuff in there that I`m certain will encourage and help others who are discerning direction... ordained or lay ministry.
The Outline is all mapped out, chapter 1 is already done, and I haven`t been this excited about a writing project in a LONG time!

What a beautiful night of prayer and worship with our youth!
We worshipped in song (and dancing). Then we prayed through stations with Scripture reflections, journal activities, and practical applications.
Then we had a short lesson on Matthew 5:14-16 about being a light in the world around us. And then we worshipped again.
One young lady even hit me up just prior to the event and asked that is she brought her guitar if she could do a song... ummm, YES! She closed us out with Reckless Love (and she NAILED it)!
This was a wonderful way to get our focus right as we head into the new school year, and give the youth some encouragement and direction.
The Holy Spirit was there, and Jesus was glorified!

I had the opportunity to share with our youth our experiences from #soulinthecity25. I led them through a sort of panel discussion, having them share their thoughts on the service projects, the worship and teaching, the fellowship experience, and their biggest take-away from the week.
And it reminded me (not that I forgot) what an incredible experience this mission trip is for these youth... so formative in so many ways.
I was surprised when one of them even talked about how grateful they were that I took their phones away from them for the week, because it forced them to really connect with one another face-to-face!
A parent of one of the youth sent me the last pic of when I was closing in prayer, pointing out, "look at their hands." The fact that they connected with one another like that when it was time to pray just further illustrates the deep connection they have and their desire to keep that connectedness going after that week.
These youth continue inspire me. And I love having a front row seat to seeing what God is doing in their lives.

A Message From Dan
What does it look like to live a Christian life? Like, TRULY live a Christian life? If I’m honest, I’m over the fake front of being a happy, blessed, and perfect person in order to impress others. Truth is, I’m a sinner who’s just trying to figure out how to do this without looking like an absolute fool. I think the Christian life is about admitting our brokenness, while raising our hand to say,”Here I am Lord! What would You have me do?” And that’s what this blog is all about… just a dude trying to do the best I can, and maybe hoping that you’re stumbling through the same journey. Maybe we can walk together.
