Holy Rhythms for Hurting Hearts
Essays on Mental Health and Ancient Church Practices
Holy Rhythms for Hurting Hearts is a collection of deeply personal and pastoral essays exploring how ancient Christian practices can meet us in the middle of modern mental health struggles. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, burnout, grief, or simply longing for peace in a chaotic world, this book offers a gentle invitation to find healing through sacred rhythms like prayer, Sabbath, liturgy, service, and more.
Written with honesty and hope, this book doesn’t offer quick fixes. Instead, it points to the beauty of slowing down, showing up, and rooting yourself in practices that have carried the Church through centuries of both suffering and joy.

i’m a killer too
I stand, leaned against the counter tops in the kitchen, and read my Bible as I wait for the coffee maker to emit that last large sputter signaling its finish. I slide my finger along the smooth edges of my Nook, as I read the beautiful poetry of David, in digital...

[epistle of james] chapter 3
[serialposts]Read James 3 (NASB, ESV, MSG) I open my Bible, the one with pages reading like a colorful map of my life these past five years. Its binding worn, its self-made tabs nearly unneeded after so much traveling to and fro through its precepts, His story. Ours....
in the practice of stopping
Why didn't they stop? I wondered that years ago when my world crumbled like old Roman architecture. Business meetings continued; church continued; chores wouldn't wait; and the world continued fast and furious, in a hurry, always late, and I wanted to throw up my...

[epistle of james] chapter 2
[serialposts]Read James 2 (NASB, ESV, MSG) when i was kid growing up in the church, the ushers to me were like the royal guard. they were the gate keepers and they were definitely intimidating. all except the one who handed out tootsie rolls to the kids. he was...
the apartment people
Breaking news: The one and only apartment complex in town is getting a new roof. With interest, I noticed this as I stared out my living room window. Two Ford F350 trucks pulled into the parking lot; that is if you could even call it a parking lot. It's more of a...
called to be a light
Easter is over. Christ is Risen! The darkness of Lent is behind us. It's time to rejoice and celebrate the Resurrection of our Savior! Or is it? Homelessness continues. Hunger abounds. Natural disasters destroy communities. Poverty cripples societies around the world....

[epistle of james] chapter 1
[serialposts]Read James 1 (NASB, ESV, MSG) OK…so sue me!!! So, I like the little wave machines. You know the ones that I'm talking about. The little rectangular glass enclosures with the blue fluid on the bottom and the clear fluid on top that do nothing other than...
the aftermath
I observed Lent. All forty days of it. I know, I feel like I should take a bow right now. I also showed up on time to my church's Easter Sunday service, scored a prime seat closer to the front than not, was moved by our phenomenal choir's performance of Hallelujah,...
jesus and my hot pink gloves
I sit in the confines of my car, hearing nothing but the muffled sound of cars whizzing by on the highway and the faint cheers of parents. The ball park lights flicker in the dimming sky. It's getting chilly. I start the car and turn the heater all the way up to the...
