book review: faith without illusions

book review: faith without illusions

If you’re a value-conscious book buyer, you owe yourself a copy of Andrew Byers’ Faith Without Illusions: Following Jesus as a Cynic-Saint (IVP Books, 2011). This book packs a bigger wallop than its 211 pages suggest. However, I wouldn’t plan to read it at the beach....

pentecost sunday

pentecost sunday

Read: Acts 2: 1-21 In most churches, for reasons partly liturgical and partly practical, the Church calms down a bit for the summer months.  Adult Forums, Sunday School, Confirmation and the like all take a hiatus, while worship guides us through our celebrations of...

[god in the yard] home: hospitality

[god in the yard] home: hospitality

[serialposts] “Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” Romans 12:13 Hospitality. The word evokes for me images of church fellowship halls, lined with long tables, loaded with steaming offerings for the Sunday afternoon potluck dinner. I can...

the land of no birthdays

the land of no birthdays

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you all .... Happy birthday to you! As we sang these familiar words, tears formed in the woman's eyes. But it's not my birthday, she said. I gently responded to her, That's okay. Today we're celebrating...

The Story That
Changed Everything

It's a beautiful day to be outside and working in the yard.

Trimmed back some palm trees, resetting the flower beds, and watching the birds nesting.

And some of the bromiliads under one of my oak trees are in full bloom! 😍

It can be exhausting maintaining this yard, but there is so much beauty to behold.

And I can feel the rhythms of God's Creation in this place.

I wish I was a better gardener, and that it had more time (and money) to invest in it. Maybe some day.

Regardless, I'm grateful for what I have. And I'll always appreciate the opportunity to experience God in this sacred place.

A Message From Dan

What does it look like to live a Christian life? Like, TRULY live a Christian life? If I’m honest, I’m over the fake front of being a happy, blessed, and perfect person in order to impress others. Truth is, I’m a sinner who’s just trying to figure out how to do this without looking like an absolute fool. I think the Christian life is about admitting our brokenness, while raising our hand to say,”Here I am Lord! What would You have me do?” And that’s what this blog is all about… just a dude trying to do the best I can, and maybe hoping that you’re stumbling through the same journey. Maybe we can walk together.
