book review: into the mist

book review: into the mist

Notably, this book review has a bias. Kathleen Beard has become a good friend. There's a strong sense of God's presence when one is around her, and recently she's become quite an influence in my life. When I agreed to review the book I hoped the writing would sustain...

[god in the yard] weep: celebration

[god in the yard] weep: celebration

[serialposts] We spend… too little time experiencing the griefs themselves. The result is that these griefs remain hidden and never open us to our joys. ~David Whyte Fingers lightly wrapped around the handles, I escape. I feel the vibration of speed beneath me, my...

interpreting the bible in community

interpreting the bible in community

[serialposts]Last week I shared 3 misunderstandings concerning Bible interpretation and suggested that the Bible should be interpreted in community.  Allow me to give some precedent on interpreting the Bible in community. First, the birth of the church is perhaps the...

the old man and the gumball

the old man and the gumball

I stand in a throng of people, yet I'm alone. People rush from one store to another, hands filled with shopping bags. Small clusters of teens move slowly through the mall, obviously more interested in gossip, laughter, and fun than spending their advance allowance. I...

The Story That
Changed Everything

It's a beautiful day to be outside and working in the yard.

Trimmed back some palm trees, resetting the flower beds, and watching the birds nesting.

And some of the bromiliads under one of my oak trees are in full bloom! 😍

It can be exhausting maintaining this yard, but there is so much beauty to behold.

And I can feel the rhythms of God's Creation in this place.

I wish I was a better gardener, and that it had more time (and money) to invest in it. Maybe some day.

Regardless, I'm grateful for what I have. And I'll always appreciate the opportunity to experience God in this sacred place.

A Message From Dan

What does it look like to live a Christian life? Like, TRULY live a Christian life? If I’m honest, I’m over the fake front of being a happy, blessed, and perfect person in order to impress others. Truth is, I’m a sinner who’s just trying to figure out how to do this without looking like an absolute fool. I think the Christian life is about admitting our brokenness, while raising our hand to say,”Here I am Lord! What would You have me do?” And that’s what this blog is all about… just a dude trying to do the best I can, and maybe hoping that you’re stumbling through the same journey. Maybe we can walk together.
